Dr. Burkhard Joksch,

Burkhard Joksch is a senior expert in the field of bioprocesses. He earned his degrees in the field of process analytics & engineering bioprocess control, with a special interest in bioprocess optimization by parallelization of experiments. He hold different positions, home and abroad, worked in and with industry organizations such as ISPE, Namur & ZVEI. His latest involvement was the establishment of the technology roadmap for automation created by the Biophorum Operations Group (BPOG). As a software and automation expert he joined the Sartorius PAT group from the start in 2010, refining the Sartorius portfolio for sensors, analytics, software & automation. As a product manager for bioprocess software, he was active in extending the PAT portfolio, such as engaging with partners for chemometric solutions and the establishment of a new automation platform for Sartorius bioprocess instrumentation.

Dr. Stuart Tindal,
Product Manager, FlexAct® Platform at Sartorius Stedim Biotech GmbH

Stuart Tindal is an organic chemist come biochemical process engineer and PAT subject matter expert for the bioprocess industry. He is from Scotland but has relocated to other European countries over the past few years and is now currently residing in Goettingen, Germany. Stuart has worked in the technical and commercial field of bioprocess technology for the past 13 years. He gained 8 years’ technical marketing experience in single-use automation | sensors and process analytical technologies while working as a product manager for Sartorius Stedim Biotech GmbH. Prior to that, Stuart obtained 5 years of biochemical engineering experience in form of a process development scientist and biochemical engineering doctorate work. Currently, he works as a product manager and is responsible for the FlexAct® Platform.

Multi-product facilities need modular package units to realize fast change-over without reducing product quality and process performance. Smart modular package units such as the FlexAct® platform can run pre-qualified and pre-tested recipes, users can rapidly integrate Sartorius Stedim Biotech’s and other manufacturers’ single-use technology in bioprocess operations, achieving faster installations with reduced downtime. The platform can be configured for maximum flexibility to control up to six different unit operations in a single process skid for buffer and media preparation, cell clarification, crossflow filtration, virus inactivation and retention at processing volumes ranging from 15 L to 2,000 L.

This process methodology is a foundation to enable the BPOG technology roadmap statement that the biopharmaceutical industry should aim for a drastic reduction in capital expenditure, manufacturing costs, product changeover and new facility build times in the next decade.
